What do you mean by vdu/ cdu? If you mean video card then it could be a number of things, what card is it? Just after the BIOS screen hit F8 and boot in safe mode, if it works it means you've got driver problems.

You mean gpu (Graphic Prosessing Unit)?

Sounds like it's driver problems. Best thing to do is to boot into safe mode (F8 at bootup) and reinstall some stable video drivers as Leeum said.

no, i meant visual display unit. i am trying to say, that my screen (vdu) displays something upto the windows loading point, then goes black. it however, doesn't go into standby, so it must have some sort of signal. its got something to do with the gpu. when i try putting it into safe mode, it shows lots of writing on the screen and thats it. it stays at that screen.?

Is it a blue screen with white writing? If it is your windows install has corrupt, grab your XP CD and boot from it, when you're at the menu press R to go into the recovery console. Try the following commands:

    chkdsk /p
    fixboot
    fixmbr

One of those (most likely the first) should fix your install

Possibly a usb2 issue. have you tried just leaving it go for a considerable amount of time ?? or disconnecting all usb devices ?? have you recently upgraded to Sp2 or added a new usb device ??

I only ask because my system sometimes takes awhile before going into windows but if i turn off my usb printer it just loads straight away and i know its a usb2 issue

Silly question, but did anything change just before this started happening? Try safemode as koola said and let us know what happens.
